It has been 100 years since the first class sat at their desks in Bradley Academy’s current structure on Murfreesboro’s Academy Street.

To celebrate that anniversary, and the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1968, Bradley Academy’s Centennial Celebration will host all alumni for an event-packed Memorial Day Weekend schedule.

Historic space

The current structure of Bradley Academy at 415 South Academy Street was designed and built in 1917, and now stands as museum and cultural center.

It opened as the new school for African American students in 1918.  When the school opened, it housed eight classrooms that served the education community until 1955, the museum release states.

The institution was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Centennial celebration

“We are extremely excited about hosting this centennial anniversary event on behalf of the legacy and legends of an exceptional education institution in the Murfreesboro community,” said Mary Wade, planning committee chairperson.

“I have had the pleasure of working with a dynamic planning committee and look forward to the upcoming events during the Memorial Day Weekend.”

The weekend’s events are set to focus on remembering the history of Bradley Academy and highlighting the graduates of the academy and Holloway High School.
