MTSU to celebrate centennial book release

The Murfreesboro Post, November 25, 2011

Residents are invited to celebrate the release of Middle Tennessee State University: A Centennial Legacy with members of the university community Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Tom Jackson Building on campus.

The special reception will be held in Cantrell Hall, and professors whose work is featured in the book will be present to discuss their contributions, including Janice M. Leone, a professor of history in the College of Liberal Arts.

Free parking will be available in the Woodfin Lot at the corner of Greenland Drive and Middle Tennessee Boulevard.

In 2008, John Vile, dean of the University Honors College, encouraged the college to participate in MTSU’s upcoming Centennial Celebration.

Leone, who also serves as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, worked with Honors Associate Dean Scott Carnicom to develop the fall 2009 Honors Lecture Series, “Blue Raider Milestones: Approaching the Centennial.”

Those nine lectures became original essays, and paired with three new essays, became the 12 chapters of A Centennial Legacy.

Current and retired MTSU history faculty are the essayists included in the book’s 302 pages, along with Reuben Kyle, an emeritus professor of economics, and Phil Mathis, former dean of the Honors College.

Jordan Kirkman, a graduate student in the College of Liberal Arts, and John Lodl, director of the Rutherford County Archives, are also among those featured in the book.
