MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Linebaugh Public Library will be hosting local author Reuben Kyle on Monday, Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m.
Kyle will be selling and signing copies of his book, “From Nashborough to the Nobel Prize: The Buchanans of Tennessee,” which was published by Twin Oaks Press in 2013.
This book, which costs $18, relates the story of the Buchanan family of Tennessee, a story that in many respects mirrors the history of the country but culminates in an accomplishment that few achieve. Like many of the European settlers of North America, the their story begins in Scotland, moves to Ireland, and crosses the Atlantic Ocean.
It follows the family as it settles a dangerous and difficult new world, helps build a community and society in mid-19th century America, survives the brutal Civil War and the challenging years after that conflict, and thrives in the 20th century.
The title of the book refers to the path leading to James McGill Buchanan Jr., who was not a political figure or a businessman like others of the family but a scholar and teacher.
Descendant James Buchanan, who won the Nobel Prize for economic science in 1986 as the founder of the field of public choice, was representative of the hardworking, independent-minded family, even the prototypical American family, from which he came.
Kyle is a professor emeritus of economics. He is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Alabama, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition, he is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
From 1972 until his retirement in 2006, he was a member of the Middle Tennessee State University economics and finance department. Over the course of those years, he served in many capacities, including chair of his department and director of the Business and Economic Research Center.
Since his retirement from the university, he has worked as a research consultant for the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. Kyle is married to Carroll T. Kyle, a retired nursing administrator, and they have one daughter and two grandsons.
