RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – Rutherford County is aiming to incentivize preservation.
Government officials told News 2 that their Historic Properties Tax Exemption program will be taking applicants by this fall.
“It’s a temporary exemption on the improvement of a historic structure for anything from ten years
on a partial restoration, to a total of fifteen years – on a total restoration,” said Rutherford County
Property Assessor, Rob Mitchell
Mitchell added that the program encourages property owners to maintain the program agreement. If owners tear down their property or make significant changes outside of their agreement – they will have to pay back the tax cut.
“We want to take the steps right now, while we can…while it’s still there [historic properties] to protect what we have…so we’re not faced with what Music Rrow and what East Nashville … and North Nashville is facing losing,” said Mitchell
