Fred Timbs and Richard Nichol (upper right) are pictured as they made repairs on the gin at Walter Hill, which opened only last Wednesday. G.C. Mathews is the owner operator of this concern, which was built forty years ago. It is the only gin located in the northeast section of the county.
According to a survey conducted last week, an average of approximately 8,000 bales of cotton are grown annually in Rutherford County.
Four large gins in Murfreesboro produce an average of 1,500 bales each, while two concerns at Smyrna and Walter Hill report annual yields of 500 or more bales respectively.

The ginning season, which comprises of the months of August, September, October, November and a part of January, is now at full swing with nearly every gin in the region reporting large daily production.
Next to livestock, cotton is second in importance to cash income in Rutherford County.
