The Murfreesboro Post, February 1, 2009
As part of its celebration of 200 years, Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center will initiate three new projects during the month of February.
The center will kick off its first museum membership drive, begin an African American Cemetery Identification project and also initiate an African American History Preservation project. Bradley officials will solicit new members by mailing a packet containing detailed membership information to a list of individuals, households and businesses contained in their existing database.
Membership levels are offered to individuals, families, students, senior citizens, small businesses and corporations. Pricing ranges from $35 up to $15,000. The varying levels have been created to accommodate everyone, and each level has different benefits. Membership is open to the public and anyone can contact a museum representative to inquire.
Museum board of directors’ member, Florence Smith, has already started the African American Cemetery Identification project. It includes the names and locations of local African American Cemeteries. Dr. George Smith will spearhead the African American History Preservation project. This will involve gathering photos and images of local African Americans, documenting the stories of those who were a part of Rutherford County many years ago, those who existed during the years of segregation and those who remember the struggles for equality.
The two projects will also have involvement from the newly formed African American Heritage group. Bradley Academy Museum & Cultural Center is located at 415 S. Academy St. in Murfreesboro. Hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed on all holidays.
