Get ready to know Rutherford County

The Murfreesboro Post, September 13, 2009

The Heritage Partnership of Rutherford County invites everyone to Get To Know Rutherford with an opportunity to celebrate the county’s collective stories of the unique people, places and things.  This annual three-day event will be a free public event where we will gather, tell our stories, highlight our history and showcase our music culture while honoring unique individuals for the contributions they have made to our community, organizer Denise Carlton said.

The free and open event allows guests to step back in time and enjoy a variety of history, music, memories, lore of the land and storytelling, full of southern traditions specific to Rutherford County.

On Friday, Oct. 2, music takes center stage at Friday Night Live.  This free evening concert series continues with The Boomers and includes the Murfreesboro Half Marathon Pasta Party.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Rutherford County history takes the stage at the county seats Historic Courthouse to celebrate its 150th anniversary.  As the Heritage Partnership of Rutherford County recognizes this anniversary for one of six antebellum courthouses in Tennessee, visitors can purchase a commemorative piece, take guided history tours and enjoy a historic photo exhibit.

Rutherford County’s Mystery Guests will be there to share their connections to local, state, national or world history.

The evening will also allow visits with local historians and authors for book sales and signings.  An evening ceremony will honor and recognize citizens that have unique stories to be told, like Adeline Kings letters to our World War II soldiers, presented by Dr. Ayne Cantrell, followed with music from the Tennessee Valley Winds, conducted by Terry Jolley.

The Tennessee Valley Winds is a nonprofit, all volunteer, self-supporting community band made of amateurs and professionals, both young and old that has been providing quality musical performances since 1984.

The evening will be completed with the county honoring individuals for lifetime achievement for unique community service to our county.

On Sunday, Oct. 4, music culture remains on center stage.

A traditional day of rest and fellowship, deeply rooted in southern old time gospel and quartet music will be the days showcase: An old-fashioned Singin on the Grounds.  The day will be dedicated to raise awareness of community service organizations located in and serving residents of Rutherford County.

Two organizations selected for the 2009 event are Feed America First and food drive campaign and Greenhouse Ministries, Help Us Grow campaign.
