Time, weather and vandals were taking a toll on a stately house on East Main Street, most often called the ‘old Elrod House.’ After developers bought the 1.5 acre site at 926 East Main Street, the house itself was given to Doyle Boyd of St. Louis.
Boyd, who is in the military, moved the house with the assistance of his family’s construction company.
The project began in October 1982. Boyd would come to Murfreesboro on weekends to move the house, and DNJ photographer Greg Campbell followed the dismantling and moving process.
The house was moved in seven sections. The second floor of the home was cut into four sections and moved. The then ground floor was moved in two sections. The garage and roof were moved separately.
The house’s new home is a farm five miles outside Murfreesboro, off the Woodbury Highway.
