Thomas Bearden Brown, 90, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, passed away on May 14th, 2016. Visitation will be held at 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17th at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18th at First Baptist Church. Dr. Noel Schoonmaker, Pam Pilote, and Dr. H. Eugene Cotey of First Baptist Church will be officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at Evergreen Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The Circle of Friends Sunday School Class will be honorary pallbearers.
Tom Brown was born in Franklin, Tennessee on July 5, 1925, the son of George A. Brown, Sr. and Mary Dixie Bearden Brown. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1943 and entered the United States Navy, serving during World War II. Following the war, he attended Vanderbilt University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. Tom worked for 35 years for the Tennessee Valley Authority as an electrical engineering supervisor before retiring in 1984.
Tom married the love of his life Helen Roberts Brown, also of Franklin, in 1950. She preceded him in death January 1, 1998.
Tom led an active volunteer life, having served as assistant scout master of Boy Scout Troop 416 for many years. After retirement, he served as a Mission Service Corps Volunteer of the North American Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention, as a lay renewal coordinator, and as a driving safety instructor for AARP.
Tom was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Murfreesboro where he was known for his teaching, mentoring and faithful service to generations of members and families. He was a great friend to many and well known for his sense of fairness and good humor.
He is survived by his children, Steve Brown (Anamaria Jocsak) of Sarasota, FL, David Brown (Candice Colando) of Silver Springs, MD, Debbie Brown Crocker (Mark), Joe Brown (Kerry Duvall), and Carol Brown Ghattas of Murfreesboro, TN. Grandchildren: Kelsey Morse-Brown, Zoe Morse-Brown, Andrew Brown, Claire Brown, Ashli Lamons (Jason), Brittany Jackson (Chris), Rachel Pepper (Brad), Erin Brown, Joseph Brown, Samuel Brown, Isaac Brown, David Ghattas and Nathan Ghattas and 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, George A Brown, Jr., sister, Mary Dixie Ford and son-in-law, Raouf Ghattas.
Memorial donations may be given to The Helen Brown Scholarship fund at First Baptist Church, The International Mission Board, or The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
