The Tennessee Historical Commission and Tennessee Wars Commission announced the purchase of more battlefield land in Murfreesboro.
The plot of land that was purchased by O’Reilly Auto Parts to build a distribution center will become part of the Stones River Battlefield. The purchase is moving forward after a large number of residents complained about the location for O’Reilly suggesting it should be part of the battlefield park and that a distribution center would create too much traffic congestion.
The purchase will cost a little over $1.8 million. That price includes 42 acres that was once land that the battle took place on.
The purchase represents one of the largest land acquisitions at the site since the National Battlefield was designated in 1960.
