Murfreesboro Post, Sunday September 9, 2012 — On a July day in 1935, Dick Shacklett walked into Leo Ferrell’s Photography shop and asked if there was anything he could do.
Dick Shacklett began his photography career in 1935.
Ferrell offered him a job processing roll film. Sometime between 1936 and 37, at the age of 16, Shacklett became a local photographer creating and documenting some of the most formidable images of Rutherford County of the 1930s and 1940s. By 1938, he was an independent businessman operating out of the old James K. Polk Hotel building. Shacklett, a man of many talents, was known to his legions of friends as a man for all seasons.
His spirit for recording the history for future generations has become the mission of Shacklett’s Photography 75 years later.
Shacklett’s Photography, a family owned business in Middle Tennessee since 1937, takes pride in personalizing the photographic experience. In 1989, son Bill Shacklett and daughter Gloria Christy officially took Shacklett’s Photography over from their parents, Dick and Ginny. They moved the business to 105 S. Church St., its present location on the Square.
For the past 23 years under their leadership, Shacklett’s has become an integral part of the community creating some of the finest portraits in photographic imaging.
In addition, Shacklett’s Photography offers premium photographic copy and restoration of old family photographs creating works of art to be enjoyed for generations to come.
As well as the commitment to creating and preserving images, Shacklett’s Photography continues to be on the cutting edge of technology with fresh 21st century innovation. Both Bill and Gloria have continued the tradition left by their parents, which has always been placing customer service as a No. 1 priority.
In 1999, Tom Christy joined the Shacklett’s Photography team. With Tom’s graphic and media skills, Shacklett’s Photography now offers complete media recovery services of photos, slides, video, and movie film.
Now to continue the family’s legacy, Gloria’s sons, Ben and Will have come into the business, Ben, offering his skills as a graphic artist, and Will, as the financial and business manager. Shacklett’s Photography intends to continue with quality service and remain an artistic force for another generation.
In 2007, Shacklett’s Photography was honored as the Downtown Business of the Year and in 2008, Bill Shacklett was honored as the Business Person of the Year by the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce.
Continuing the legacy of Dick and Ginny Shacklett, the mission of Shacklett’s Photography is to create and preserve the best in imaging for our community for future generations.
Join Shacklett’s Photography at the 75th Birthday celebration at the studio on the Square, from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 and from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 15.
Friday evening, National Dance Clubs of America will dance to the warm, orchestral sounds of the Ginny and Shack era (World War II) and Saturday, 9-11 Birthday Celebration Podcast and reception at Paw Bunk’s, and from 11-12 Renaissance Revival will be in concert on the Square. Studio will feature photos and memorabilia both days.
