Author John Cedric Spence was born November 14, 1809 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, spending most of his life in Rutherford County.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, 52-year-old John C. Spence bitterly opposed session. However, as the war escalated his influence and feelings were with the South.
The reader will notice errors in spelling and sentence structure. However, the Rutherford County Historical Society felt it was important to reproduce the original Spence manuscripts in the style in which Mr. Spence has written them.
