Rutherford County soldiers in World War I

The following newspaper clippings are from the Ernie Johns collection.

Rutherford County native John I. Powers was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 3, 1917, at Murfreesboro “to serve for the period of the emergency.” He is pictured at the right end of the front row with his fellow inductees on the steps of the Rutherford County Courthouse.
John served in the 81st Infantry Division with a number of Rutherford Countians.
As a result of poison gas exposure in combat, John suffered respiratory damage. Returning home, John was eventually employed as a fireman at the VA Hospital.
